Rain in September. Scattered showers and in some areas heavy rain surprised Israel on Wednesday morning: The storm system “Daniel” brought rain that interrupted the long summer dry period. Such rainfall is rather unusual in the region at this time of year.

The center and south of the country got the most rainfall. And with the rain came a break in the high temperatures, cloudy skies, and even thunderstorms. The odd weather is expected to last until this evening, Israel time.

Due to the current weather situation, warnings have been issued of possible flash floods, particularly in the southern and eastern parts of Israel. Clear skies and normal temperatures for the season are forecast for Thursday. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly again just in time for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins on Friday evening.
Cyclone Daniel caused significant damage and claimed numerous lives in other countries such as Greece and Libya. In Libya, heavy rains led to catastrophic flooding, killing thousands. A significantly milder course is expected in Israel, but there is still a risk of serious flooding, as there is with the start of every rainy season.
