While one might never see them, Israel’s marine commandoes are responsible for security on the beaches. “We are the equivalent of the look-out teams for the ground troops,” Lieutenant Rotem explained. “We are responsible for surveillance, detection and prevention against infiltration by terrorists. We monitor every boat that leaves or arrives in Israel.”
The soldiers of the marine commando units are spread out all along Israel’s coasts, from Rosh Hanikra in the north to Eilat in the south. In total there are eight larger bases and two smaller ones. The smaller bases in the central part of the country protect the beaches in Tel Aviv, Netanya, Hadera and Haifa. In Haifa there is also a training base, which is responsible for the northern coasts.
All the monitoring bases operate under the supervision of the Yishay Marine Surveillance Unit.
