While prices for taxi rides are falling worldwide, mainly due to competition from Uber, they are rising in Israel, where ride-sharing services are still largely prohibited.

Taxi rates in Israel recently increased by 4.2 percent, with the base price going up from 11.50 shekels to 12 shekels. From the third passenger on, each additional passenger costs an additional 4.80 shekels, and transporting a suitcase now adds another 4.30 shekels, up from 4.20 shekels.

The reaction has understandably been less than positive. Demand to let Uber and other similar services operate in Israel is getting louder. Overall, there is very little competition in the taxi market in Israel, and current levels of service...
