Peace is always the ideal condition, but also always elusive. These old black-and-white photos reveal the cautious excitement that accompanied the arrival of the Egyptian archenemy to Israel. Sadat had come to Israel! When even our most bitter and determined enemy reaches for peace, anything is possible. You could see it in the faces of Israel’s politicians – the sense that a new era was dawning. Such enthusiasm was absent from the 1994 peace treaty with Jordan, and certainly from the Oslo Accords.
