But to hear the mainstream international media describe it, the coastal enclave on Israel’s southern Mediterranean border is the most destitute and oppressed scrap of land on the face of the planet. A lot of that has to do with Israel itself, but not for the reasons one might immediately assume.
At least in the narrow scope of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this is very much a David-and-Goliath scenario, making it something of a dream come true for the “social justice” crowd that’s perpetually looking for a cause to champion. Combine that with Israel’s openness and freedom of the press, and it’s little wonder that the situation here receives such exaggerated coverage, while far more egregious cases like China’s occupation of Tibet are all but ignored. And even this wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if not for two important factors: a millennia-old ingrained hostility toward the Jews, and the fact that Israel’s opponents aren’t playing by the same set of rules.
