Every year, many archaeological excavations are conducted in Israel. Yet, the excavation at Tel Abu Shusha is unusual in that it is being conducted in search of an important historical site whose exact location is contested.
Israel is one of the most intensively excavated countries in the world. These excavations range from salvage excavations to large scale excavations that are undertaken under the guidance of universities from Israel and abroad. Salvage excavations are normally conducted when archaeological sites are uncovered during the construction of a building or road. In addition, the whole site is excavated until bedrock level, and it is often dismantled for the construction after the excavation.
On the other hand, excavations that are conducted by universities are planned, with the leading excavators arriving at the site with clear questions and theories. Moreover, only part of the site is excavated in order to leave a majority of the archaeological remains for future generations and more advanced analysis techniques.
