While falling short of the robust defense of the Jewish state often offered by the Trump Administration, the Biden White House on Wednesday did take issue with the labeling of Israel as an “apartheid state” by a major human rights organization.

A report published on Tuesday by Human Rights Watch claimed that Israel is “committing the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution,” and works to “maintain the domination of Jewish Israelis over Palestinians.”

US President Joe Biden’s State Department said that while it would not “offer public evaluations of reports by outside groups,” it did stress that “it is not the view of this administration that Israel’s actions constitute apartheid.”

Israel reacted to the HRW report with outrage, calling it entirely fictitious and “bordering on antisemitism.”

At the same time, the Israel Foreign Ministry signaled that it as not surprised by the publication, noting that Human Rights Watch “is known to have a long-standing anti-Israel agenda.”
