While visiting her loved ones at the local cemetery in Ashdod, a woman noticed a gravestone inscribed with John 11:25, a verse from the New Testament. Appalled, she contacted her rabbi who promised to take care of the matter, insisting that a “Christian Jew” should not be buried together with Jews.
This may sound like unnecessarily strict and mean religiosity to some, but by digging a little deeper we can unearth an even deeper problem and bring back to life a vital truth.
Digging down
The problem for our friend and her rabbi began as the Gospel moved out from “Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria to the ends of the world” and what became known as Christianity moved away from Jerusalem too, only spiritually, abandoning thousands of years of her Hebraic heritage.
