Our Lukewarm and Fearful Responses to Iran Are Not Biblical

Evil flees before and is defeated by truth and light. But it is given free rein when we sit idly by and do nothing, or worse, cower in the corner.

The tepid response to Iran coming from America and Europe only serves to further embolden the ayatollahs in their demonic quest to put the entire region under the repressive thumb of Islam.

It’s been rightly compared to the initial response of Britain and France to Nazi aggression in the lead-up to World War II. Sure, they weren’t happy about it. But they also weren’t prepared to do anything about it.

Israel, on the other hand, has learned its lesson. At first similarly blind to what the Nazis were truly capable of, the Jews of Europe failed to fully grasp what was happening until it was too late.

The Jews of Israel won’t make that same mistake twice. Which is why on Sunday Israel’s dovish interim Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yair Lapid, uncharacteristically slammed his European Union counterpart, Josep Borrell, for once again trying to bring Iran back to the negotiating table despite recent overwhelming evidence that the Islamic Republic has continued its nuclear weapons program in defiance of all previous agreements.

“This is a strategic mistake that sends the wrong message to Iran,” Lapid wrote to Borrell, adding that the European official doesn’t “care for the lives of Israeli citizens.”

That was about as close as he could have come to saying that while Europe might not again be the perpetrator, it clearly won’t stand in the way of another attempt to annihilate the Jewish people.

Another analyst suggested that the West was signaling fear in the face of Iranian aggression, which is equally problematic as a lukewarm response.

If there are two things that fuel evil, they are fear and indifference.

Evil flees before and is defeated by truth and light. But it is given free rein when we sit idly by and do nothing, or worse, cower in the corner.

We are meant to be a bulwark against evil. We are admonished not to be lukewarm (Revelation 3:16), and to reject the spirit of fear in favor of God’s spirit of power, love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7).

When we encounter evil threatening the lives of innocents, we should be prepared to take a stand and to defend those with a gun (or nuclear bomb) to their head. All rhetoric aside, most Israelis and Arabs no longer believe that the “Christian” West (America and Europe) will defend them against the evil intentions of the Islamic Republic.

Which is why we now hear talk of a Middle East “NATO” made up of Israel and its new Arab partners.

But Israel was not reborn nor will it continue to survive and thrive as a result of human efforts, of alliances, agreements and guarantees. Israel stands among us again solely as a result of God’s faithfulness to His word. And Israel succeeds against all odds because He decreed it so.

In this we have a role to play. Because the Enemy’s schemes to reverse the divinely-mandated restoration of Israel never cease. And our fervent prayers, Bible-based activism and gestures of support for Israel are ultimately far more effective than any round of shuttle diplomacy. In the end, the decisions regarding Israel’s future aren’t being made in Washington, Tehran or even Jerusalem. They’re made at The Throne.
