Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has made Hezbollah’s survival a condition for any agreement with the United States, declaring that Tehran’s support for the Lebanese terrorist organization remains a strategic obligation of the Islamic Republic.
In a message posted Sunday to Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, Khamenei praised the group’s war against Israel and said Iran would continue defending what he called its “mujahideen” allies. He also wrote that there was no way forward except “jihad and resistance,” placing Hezbollah at the center of Tehran’s confrontation with Jerusalem and Washington.

Khamenei said any deal with the United States must include a full and unconditional end to Israeli military action in Lebanon. He framed the demand as a matter of Lebanese sovereignty, but the practical meaning is clear: Iran wants Hezbollah left in place, armed and free to rebuild along Israel’s northern border.
That demand goes to the heart of the current conflict. Hezbollah renewed attacks on northern Israel in March after the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the start of Operation Roaring Lion, the US-Israeli campaign against Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure. Israel responded with expanded strikes across Lebanon aimed at degrading Hezbollah’s rocket, drone, and command networks.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has since moved to curb Hezbollah’s power. While Israeli officials remain skeptical of the Lebanese authorities’ willingness and ability to truly confront the Iranian proxy, rare direct talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials have produced a framework deal that would see an Israeli redeployment conditioned on Hezbollah’s removal from southern Lebanon.
Khamenei’s statement signals that Iran is trying to use negotiations with Washington to rescue its most important regional proxy from that outcome.
Hezbollah has spent decades building an Iranian-backed army on Lebanon’s side of the border, turning civilian areas into launch zones and Israeli communities into targets. No Israeli government can accept a diplomatic arrangement that freezes Hezbollah in place and calls it peace.
Khamenei’s message removes any remaining ambiguity. Tehran is not seeking calm in Lebanon. It is seeking protection for the armed jihadist force it built there.
