We recently took note of the central role airborne “drones” played in the latest conflict with Gaza, and their role in protecting Israel from extremist Islamic attacks on many fronts. The operational activity of the drone squadrons (also called RPAs / UAVs) now constitutes about 80% of all operational flight hours in the Israel Air Force!
Israel has been at the forefront globally in developing and integrating drone technologies since the 1970s, as soon as the IDF perceived how important they would become in defending the country. These relatively inexpensive aircraft undergird IDF intelligence gathering by putting cameras over danger zones to transmit an accurate picture to Israeli commanders in real time. As “eyes in the skies,” they hone in on threats from Lebanon to Gaza, and much farther as well. Remotely piloted aircraft made by the Israeli aerospace industry save many lives by identifying threats and even helping neutralize them with armament payloads, all without putting pilots in danger.
