Although the south of Israel is mostly desert, over the years more and more farmers have made this wasteland flourish. When I recently visited the village of Bnei Netzarim, I was amazed at the size of the agricultural land that has emerged on the barren desert soil.
To get to Bnei Netzarim, you drive through a labyrinth of greenhouses and fields that stretch for miles. Places like this, and there are several others in the area, provide Israel primarily with vegetables. Cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage and much more that ends up on the country’s tables every day are grown here.
Chaos and damage
However, a lot has changed since October 7th. Although Bnei Netzarim was not stormed by terrorists that day, a rocket hit a greenhouse. This caused widespread damage.
But that wasn’t the worst of it. Much more serious was the fact that the residents of the south wereevacuated, and were only able to return two weeks later. During this time the plants were not cared for. Those who returned found the fields and greenhouses completely neglected....
