Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. In the Muslim world, it is a holy month with significant restrictions. Compliance with the prohibitions of Ramadan is considered one of the five pillars of Islam.

During this time, eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse are prohibited. In contrast to the daylight hours, the nights of Ramadan have a festive and happy character. It is customary to eat the celebratory Iftar meal with family in the evening, which breaks the fast. Ramadan is considered a time of holiness, brotherhood and joy in Muslim culture. According to the hadiths (the main interpretive sources of Islam), Muslims won all their wars during the month of Ramadan. In Israel, Ramadan has significance politically and in terms of security, as many Muslims spend their holy days at the Al-Aqsa Mosque atop Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.

    The Al Aqsa was never a mosque until the ‘Palestinians’ made it one to further their purpose.
