When God wanted to create Eve, He said to Adam, “I will create a partner for you who will be perfect for you. She will be intelligent and very beautiful, she will cook for you and keep your house in order, she will take care of your children and help you reach your potential.”
“Great!” Adam replied.
“But you’ll have to give me your leg, from which I will create her,” said God.
“Hm, that’s quite a high price,” Adam answered. “What do I get for a rib?”
This week, we begin the new cycle of Torah readings with the creation story in the portion Bereshit. We learn about the first humans and, every year, stumble anew over the peculiar description of Eve’s creation:
And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man (Adam) should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:18)
In this translation, a helper was created for Adam who “fits” him,...

Interesting, my wife and I are approaching our 56th anniversary, my experiences are that we have gone back and forth in the helping part. I have been the stronger as the male is physically, but she in the spiritual realm. That has run back and forth many times as we aged, humans have times of strength and times of weakness as we grow spiritually and physically.
She had times when she took the role of leader when I was down physically and one time almost lost my life, she did what was good while I recovered. Now she is in long term care and it is my turn to take her part in doing what is necessary to keep things going.
Opposition? I think the Lord knew what he was doing in what it would take to get us through this life as one in Him. The hard times build strength if we choose to go through it together, to many young people today out of not having the wisdom to stay together during a trial, fail, they don’t know there is more strength as one together, than two apart.
The enemy of our souls takes advantage of the separation, they have no strength to oppose him if they try to do it alone.
A man and a woman choose a good thing when they choose to live their lives together, it is the hardest job they will ever do, it takes time to fully become, one. But in the end, I am starting to believe becoming one is also in joining with the Lord of creation. Giving up, in the long run is not an option, the strength in life with your mate, is in going the full course as, one.
