During the night leading into Monday, Hezbollah once again attacked Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon with a drone. Staff Sgt. Adam Tzarfati of Rosh HaAyin paid for the mission with his life. He was only 20 years old.

The attack took place at around 1 a.m., when an explosive Hezbollah drone struck the position where forces from the Golani Brigade combat team were operating. Tzarfati served as a fighter in the Maglan Unit of the Commando Brigade — an elite unit specializing in operations behind enemy lines.

Another soldier was seriously wounded, and two others sustained light injuries. All of the wounded were evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.

Ceasefire on paper only

Tzarfati fell just one day after Staff Sgt. Michael Tyukin, 21, from Ashkelon, who was also killed by a Hezbollah drone during the night leading into Sunday. Tyukin served in the 846th Reconnaissance Battalion of the Givati Brigade. At around 10:30 p.m., an explosive drone struck his position in southern Lebanon. Four other soldiers were lightly wounded in that attack.

Hezbollah had already struck in the days before. On May 24, Sgt. Nehoray Leizer, 19, from Eilat, was killed in the Bint Jbeil area. On May 28, Sgt. Rotem Yanai, 20, from Givat Ada, fell when a drone hit the military compound near Moshav Shomera as she was running toward a shelter.

With Tzarfati’s death, 14 Israeli soldiers have now fallen since the ceasefire took effect in April — and 951 have fallen in total since Oct. 7, 2023.

Tzarfati was from Rosh HaAyin, a city in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. He had qualified for the demanding Maglan Unit, one of the toughest selection tracks in the Israeli military. His family has been notified by the army. Further details regarding the funeral and mourning arrangements were not initially released.
