Nearly three years after Hamas launched its unprecedented cross-border assault on southern Israel, Israeli security officials say they have eliminated the overwhelming majority of the terrorists who participated in the October 7 massacre.
According to Israeli media, 2,561 of the attackers have been killed to date, including roughly 1,000 who died during the initial battles inside Israel as the IDF regained control of communities and military bases. Israeli assessments have long estimated that around 3,000 armed terrorists crossed the border during the assault, meaning only several hundred of the original infiltrators are believed to remain alive.
The operation to locate those responsible has remained an ongoing priority. A dedicated joint task force of the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet continues to track participants in the massacre, with recent precision strikes eliminating additional Hamas operatives directly linked to the attacks and hostage-taking.
The figures also provide important context for broader claims surrounding the Gaza war.
International criticism frequently focuses on the overall death toll without accounting for the nature of the conflict: nearly three years of sustained combat in one of the world’s most densely populated urban environments, against armed groups that deliberately embed command centers, weapons and fighters within civilian neighborhoods, schools, hospitals and tunnel networks.
Equally absent from many discussions is the death toll ratio. Israeli officials estimate that roughly half of those killed in Gaza have been Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives, producing an approximate civilian-to-combatant ratio of 1:1. While casualty estimates remain disputed, military analysts have noted that such a ratio—if broadly accurate—is significantly lower than those recorded in many recent urban conflicts involving insurgent forces operating among civilians.
Civilians casualties are always a tragedy. But charges of “genocide” are not only not supported by these figures, they are rendered absurd.
