For the first time, an Arab state could be given the opportunity to enrich uranium on its own soil – a technological step that, while officially intended to serve energy supply, could pave the way for the development of nuclear weapons in the long term. For Israel, therefore, the issue is not just Saudi Arabia, but whether the Middle East is facing a nuclear domino effect.

The American agreement to allow Saudi Arabia to build a civilian nuclear program is causing considerable concern in the Middle East. Experts warn that the agreement could trigger a regional nuclear arms race in the long term. While the agreement officially concerns the civilian use of nuclear energy, one detail is crucial: Riyadh will not only be allowed to have a nuclear reactor, but also to enrich uranium on its own soil.
