Why is Europe suddenly defending the very border security it has been accusing Israel of for years?

The images from Ceuta are shaking Europe. Tens of thousands of Arab migrants are breaking through the border fences of the Spanish exclave in North Africa, France is tightening its controls on the Spanish border, and calls for a tougher migration policy are growing louder in several EU countries. But the crisis raises far more questions than just the failure of border security. And amidst this chaos, something remarkable is happening: instead of discussing the failure of their own policies, politicians and commentators are blaming Israel. When they run out of convincing answers, they often look for a scapegoat. And Israel apparently still fits the bill perfectly. Doesn’t Ceuta also reveal a remarkable contradiction? Europe, of all places, which has been sharply criticizing Israel’s border fences, security measures, and its policies in Judea and Samaria or toward the Gaza Strip for years, is suddenly discovering the value of controlled borders. Why can’t they simply admit that this is a security policy bankruptcy? The onslaught on Ceuta demonstrates how quickly political and moral standards can shift when one’s sovereignty and territory...
