We live in an age that celebrates freedom while steadily losing the capacity to be free. We go on endlessly about our rights but rarely of our responsibility. We defend personal choice yet seldom ask whether our choices lead to truth and goodness or merely gratify our desires. A civilization that no longer knows what freedom is cannot preserve it for long.
Religion has not escaped this crisis. Contemporary faith readily offers edification but lacks the courage to break idols and shatter cold heartedness. It has become an institution, a creed, and a ritual. It no longer interrupts our lives with the claim of God. Faith has become respectable, promising freedom without repentance, comfort without transformation, and belonging without surrender. Having ceased to ask what God requires of us, we inevitably begin asking only what life owes us. At that moment, freedom itself is redefined.
