Our faces betray everything. How often do I recognize myselft in the behavior of others? We often know each other better than we want to admit. We see in ourselves more easily the positive, less the negative. In other people, we see the negative, rather than the positive. That’s our nature. Negative behavior is always more likely to come from others, and far less likely to come from oneself.
I recently discussed this with a friend. In Israeli society, the dichotomy can be clearly observed in the conflict between the political left and right, the coalition and the opposition, as well as between religious and secular Jews. “As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man,” reads the wisdom of Solomon recorded in Proverbs 27:19. Just as we can observe our own face reflected on the surface of the water, so we see our own human heart reflected in the hearts and behavior of others in our own society.
