The Steiger has been a prestigious annual tribute since 2005, acknowledging excellence and dedication in the fields of charity, music, film, sports, and building the European community.
Steiger is a German term referring to a mining foreman, and the award is intended to reflect the qualities of responsibility, honesty, openness and hard work valued in the Ruhr region, an area of large industrial and economically-rich cities bordered by the rivers Ruhr to the south, Rhine to the west, and Lippe to the north.
So one might ask why such a celebrated acknowledgement of hardworking and dedicated German men and women would be presented to the president of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), a man who calls suicide bombers “heroes” and names streets and town squares after “martyrs” who murder Israeli men, women and children in cold blood.
