It was on 2nd November 1917 that the British Government issued what came to be known as the Balfour Declaration.

This was in the form of a letter from then Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild – who was asked to convey its contents to the “Zionist authorities” – to the effect that “His Majesty’s Government” would give favourable consideration to the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine.

Although the British Government eventually reneged on its pledge, that date was a milestone on the road to establishment of the State of Israel.

[In world history at the time, publication of the Balfour Declaration was greatly overshadowed by another event occurring in November 1917 – the “October Revolution” in Russia.]

Thirty years later, on 29th November 1947, a further milestone was ‘erected’ along that road. It was then that the United Nations General Assembly voted for the partition of Palestine and establishment – inter alia – of a Jewish State there.
