This decision is now due to be implemented in May 2018, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Israel’s modern rebirth. US President Donald Trump is expected by many to attend.
“Al-Quds is the eternal capital of Palestine, and that is something that no American president can change,” insisted Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in an angry tirade against Trump. “The Americans and the Israelis will not succeed in creating a new reality in Jerusalem,” he continued. “Israel has irrevocably slammed shut the door to a two-state solution.” Abbas called on the UN Security Council and the international community to immediately call for a new Middle East peace conference as an alternative to America’s role as primary mediator.
In the same way that the Palestinians are angry about the American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Jewish state had also been angry for decades that Jerusalem had not been recognized as such.
