He died in the year 4 BC at his winter residence in Jericho, and his body was laid in a unique mausoleum built at Herodium, near Bethlehem, known in Israel as the Herodion, where his tomb was recently unearthed.
Today many people admire Herod mainly because of his monumental building projects. Among his impressive achievements were the magnificently remodeled Second Temple in Jerusalem, situated upon the newly built “Plateau Box” of the Temple Mount, the harbor city of Maritime Caesarea and the fortress at the cliff of Masada in the Judean desert.
However, from a biblical perspective, the supposedly great Herod was nothing but a cruel murderer who assassinated the innocent infant boys under two years of age in Bethlehem and its surrounding area, after the birth of the Lord Yeshua (Matt. 2:13-18).
