Over the past 25 years, the Shiite state has become more and more of a threat to Israel. And yet, there is nothing new under the sun. In the past it was the Assyrians who threatened to destroy Israel with their latest technology. This existential threat was described in the Bible in Isaiah 7 and in 2 Kings 16, as well as in 2 Chronicles 28. Additionally, we have inscriptions on the black obelisk of Shalmaneser III that reveal the drama between Israel and Assyria, thus proving the biblical account accurate.
What can Israel learn from this episode in her past? As happened at that time, must Israel once again go to war? Or capitulate? Or should Israel first form an alliance against Iran? Today’s Iran is similar to ancient Assyria in the sense that they are more developed strategically than other countries in the region, and thus represent the greatest regional threat. In biblical times, an alliance was formed to counter this threat. But is the same even possible today? An alliance between Jews and Sunnis against the Shiites, perhaps?
