One would think that given their long conflict with the Arab and Muslim world, Israelis would be suspicious of such Islamic garb, which combines the traditional burka head covering with a modest bathing suit. French officials have warned that the burkini could be used by terrorists to conceal weapons.
But the response in Israel has been quite to the contrary.
“They have no right to ban the burkini,” Marci Rapp, owner of a Jerusalem-based swimwear company, told The Times of Israel. “They have no right to tell women what to wear on the streets or at the beach.”
Rapp and others who seemed “offended” by the ban noted that religious Jewish and Christian women also prefer modest swimwear, though typically not so concealing as a burkini.
As for average, ordinary Israelis, they just don’t care what anyone wears to the beach.
