Burkinis? No Problem in Israel
Israelis express surprise over French ban on Muslim beachwear, while being so critical of Israeli counter-terror
Images of French police demanding a Muslim woman remove her “burkini” caused a bit of a stir in Israel.
One would think that given their long conflict with the Muslim world, Israelis would be the most suspicious of such Muslim garb.
But quite to the contrary, Israel’s Yediot Ahronot conducted an experiment at a popular Tel Aviv beach and found that not a single Israeli Jew was bothered by the presence of burkini-clad Muslim women.
The entire affair was puzzling to Israelis, who are so often criticized for their anti-terror methods, but who would never follow the European example of outlawing traditional Muslim clothing.
