This year, the Israeli version of popular televised singing competition X-Factor was won by 17-year-old Eden Alena from Jerusalem.

It was the first time that the competition had been won by an Ethiopian singer.

Eden was raised in an Orthodox household by her single mother, but she left religion a few years ago. Eden attends a prestigious secular school, but her dream is to make it as a recording artist. And with her X-Factor win, Eden now has her first contract.

Eden’s very first appearance on X-Factor astonished the judges and the audience, and the video clip of that audition quickly went viral in Israel. She was showered with attention following her victory, even receiving an invitation from Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat (see photo).
