The vast nation of Turkey, to Israel’s north just beyond Lebanon and Syria, was for centuries the dominant superpower of the entire Middle East. The fall of the Turkish (Ottoman) Empire after World War I was what opened the door for the return of Israeli sovereignty in this land. And now, as of early December 2024, Turkey is suddenly back – right across our Golan border as the sponsor and puppet master behind the new Syrian regime. No one knows yet how this quick overthrow of the Assad regime will affect Israel. Israel experienced very friendly relations with Turkey from 1992 until 2002, but since then only antagonism and even saber-rattling from the new “sultan” there, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
