Exploiting Freedom of the Press to Kill Jews

Palestinian terrorist who stabbed and badly wounded police officer hid amongst a group of reporters

Despite the fact that freedom of the press in Israel is lightyears ahead of that in any neighboring country, including the Palestinian Authority, antagonists still find excuses to criticize the Jewish state in this regard.

The truth is that Israel often finds itself in need of rethinking absolute freedom of the press given how often it's exploited to do harm to the nation.

That was literally the case last Friday when a Palestinian terrorist pretended to be a journalist in order to get close enough to Israeli police officers to stab one nearly to death.

The terrorist huddled up with a group of foreign and local reporters at a junction outside the city of Ramallah and waited for his prey to stroll close enough.

An Israel Police spokesperson stated: "The terrorist used the media as a cover to prepare for the attack and ran toward the officers from where the press was gathered."

Once officers were within range, 29-year-old Mohammed Aqal pounced, stabbing one Israeli twice in the upper body.

Aqal was also wearing a phony bomb vest, though it remains unclear why, since he then tried to flee the scene, only to have additional officers fearful that he'd detonate what they thought to be a real bomb shoot and kill him.

Israel said it had no intention of putting restrictions on press access in response to this serious incident, but did warn that the terrorists were as much a threat to actual journalists as they are to Israeli soldiers.

"The Israel Police and Border Police will continue to operate in all areas and at the same time will continue to let the foreign media cover events, despite the threat caused by Palestinian terrorists."
