“It is after all crystal clear to everyone that the Jerusalem Temple that was destroyed by the Romans [in 70 AD] was a Jewish Temple,” Guterres said on Israel Radio.
It was a blow to the Palestinian narrative which asserts that the Temple never existed. The Palestinian Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Adnan el Husseini blasted Guterres for contradicting last year’s resolution by the UN cultural agency UNESCO which denied any Jewish connection to the Temple Mount or Western Wall.
“UNESCO has made it clear that the Al-Aqsa Mosque [on the Temple Mount] is the only historical structure established on this site,” el Husseini said. “Guterres is failing to fulfil his role and is distorting not only the resolution but also history.”
