
With Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome anti-missile system significantly reducing the threat of rocket attacks, the most likely trigger for the next round of fighting is an attack via the numerous “terror tunnels” running from Gaza into southern Israel.
These infiltration tunnels became the major focus of the Israeli army during the 50-day Gaza war in 2014. They pose a tremendous threat to both Israeli soldiers and civilians, as a number of those that were discovered had exit points very close to Israeli border communities.
Israel destroyed 32 tunnels during the 2014 conflict, but Hamas boasted that many more remained. That has now been confirmed following the discovery and demolition of at least two very long tunnels that had exit points in Israeli territory.
And who knows how many more are out there.
