In an initiative to unify the Tribe by getting as many Jews as possible to celebrate the biblical day of rest together, the project has inspired over one million Jews from Africa to Mexico to put on a kippa (skull cap), bless the bread and wine, and celebrate Shabbat as one united family.
The global Shabbat idea, which began in 2013, was launched by South African Rabbi Warren Goldstein. This year, a record number of Jews from 94 countries gathered around Sabbath tables, many for the first time in their lives.
“It has been so inspiring to see how the Shabbat Project connects with millions of Jews from every kind of background,” said the rabbi. “People around the world have worked in partnership to make this a sublime moment of Jewish unity.”
