With the elections behind us, Israelis are now waiting to watch today’s moon landing attempt. Beresheet, or Genesis, the Israeli space vehicle, is scheduled to touch down on the lunar surface Thursday night between 10:00-11:00 pm Israel time.
Celebrations, parties and lectures are scheduled to take place around the country to watch the historic event.
For those outside of Israel, you can join in and watch a livestream of the landing on the SpaceIL YouTube Channel, Facebook page and on their website.
While waiting for the landing, why not check out some of the fabulous pictures Beresheet has sent back to earth of the far side of the moon on SpaceIL’s Twitter feed:

Beresheet is scheduled for a soft touchdown on the Sea of Serenity, a flat area on the moon’s surface. A successful landing will make Israel only the fourth country to land on the moon after the Soviet Union, the US and China.
Last week, SpaceIL broadcast from its control room as Beresheet entered the moon’s orbit. The maneuver required a six-minute full throttle burn to gain the lunar orbit at just the right angle-not too close to avoid a crash landing–and not too far and be carried away into outer space. Numerous smaller burns along the way have positioned the spacecraft into an angle that should insure a soft landing and keep the vehicle intact.
Beresheet has traveled over 4 million miles in its orbits around the earth and moon to arrive at the crucial point of toady’s landing. Once on the moon, the spacecraft will take photographs and send back crucial data on electronic magnets for a number of experiments in partnership with the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. The spacecraft will also leave a time capsule containing an entire Bible printed in microscopic text on a coin.
Beresheet is not scheduled to return to earth.
