According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli forces struck several rocket and launch positions belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on Wednesday evening. The military operation was carried out because the targeted positions constitute a violation of the existing ceasefire.

The IDF conducted airstrikes in the night leading up to December 24, 2025, targeting multiple launch sites and military facilities that, according to Israeli authorities, are used by the Shiite militia Hezbollah for the preparation and execution of attacks. The military operations take place amid ongoing tensions along Israel’s northern border.

The Israeli military stated that it will continue to act to eliminate all threats to the State of Israel and to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its capabilities.

Attacks on rocket and launch positions

According to official IDF statements, several Hezbollah rocket and launch positions in southern Lebanon were targeted on Wednesday evening. These are military facilities from which the armed group has been actively operating in recent weeks. The Israeli military spokesperson described the existence of these positions as a “violation of the agreements between Israel and Lebanon” and emphasized that the IDF will continue operations to “prevent any attempt by Hezbollah to restore its capabilities along the northern border.”

In connection with these strikes, the IDF had already reported on the previous Monday that it eliminated three Hezbollah operatives who were allegedly involved in planning attacks on Israeli troops and rebuilding terrorist infrastructure in the Sidon area. According to the IDF, an initial review indicated that one of the killed individuals was also a member of a Lebanese military intelligence unit, while another belonged to Hezbollah’s air defense network.

Ceasefire, political statements, and international situation

The IDF attack occurred at a time when both Israel and international observers note that the situation along Israel’s northern border remains highly tense. The ceasefire agreed between Israel and Lebanon in November 2024 stipulated, among other things, that Hezbollah should be disarmed and its military presence south of the Litani River ended. Critics, including Yisrael Beiteinu party chairman Avigdor Liberman, have stated, however, that real disarmament of Hezbollah is still “far from being achieved – not even in southern Lebanon.”

At the same time, Saudi, French, and US representatives are working on a plan for the complete demilitarization of Hezbollah in the area south of the Litani, as part of a diplomatic initiative to strengthen the ceasefire mechanism. These talks are intended to include a more closely monitored process as well as the possible involvement of international forces.

The repeated strikes by Israeli fighter jets and drones on targets in Lebanon coincide with reports that Hezbollah continues to use weapons depots, launch positions, and military infrastructure despite the agreements – which Israel classifies as a permanent threat to its northern border. In addition to the airstrikes, Israeli security sources stressed that such military operations are part of an ongoing effort to neutralize potential Hezbollah attack resources.
