It is difficult to tell a story of a beautiful and happy life for Rebekah and Isaac, the middle couple of the patriarchs. After the story of the binding of Isaac, the Bible immediately tells us about Sarah’s death.
The binding constitutes a “big bang,” because this event is what affected the course of Isaac’s life. And what is the effect? One can discern a period of separation. After the binding (akedah), Abraham lives in Beersheba (Genesis 22:19) while Sarah lives in Kiryat Arba (Genesis 23:2), and Isaac also lives alone. He pitches his tent in the well Lehai Roi.
“Now Isaac had come fom Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.” (Genesis 24:62 NIV)
It can be said that there is no communication within the family as a result of the difficult events. What is Isaac’s condition after the “binding”? The Bible does not provide much information about Isaac. It is strange that it is so. Is it that Isaac is not an interesting character, and therefore does not receive attention?...
