Isaiah 62 Prayer for Israel – What’s It All About?

Happening now, and just in time to spiritually combat the Gaza rockets — an international initiative “For Zion’s Sake.”

Thousands of Christian and Messianic Jewish groups are marking a 21-day special period of fasting and praying for Jerusalem and Israel, right now, leading up to Shavuot/Pentecost on May 26, 2023.

The prayer initiative is inspired by Isaiah 62 – a chapter filled with several highlights of divine mandate regarding Jerusalem and Israel, in the middle of Isaiah’s sustained prophetic crescendo.

The intercession initiative started in pro-Israel prayer-house circles abroad, but has been joined by many Messianic Jewish groups throughout Israel as well – aiming to snowball into over one million people worldwide who will fast and devote an hour in daily prayer over the three weeks, “for Zion’s sake.”

A mini-air war broke out conspicuously at the start of the 21 days of prayer – but seems to have come to a close with relatively little loss of life, despite over 1,000 rockets having been launched by the Islamic Jihad from Gaza toward multiple Israeli towns and cities. (Areas that came under fire include towns where several of Israel Today’s staff and their families live.)

Are not the Jihadi resistance and its quick conclusion likely related to these fervent prayers?

The Israeli press has not as yet picked up on the prayer initiative, making it the equivalent of a “private prayer” in a corporate world-wide “prayer closet.” However, for years now, many Israelis have “picked up” on the fact that Zionist Christians worldwide are among Israel’s most trusted friends.

The opening verse of Isaiah 62 is a central source of inspiration for Israel Today and our faith-based journalistic mission.

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a blazing torch… I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest and give him no rest till _he establishes Jerusalem and makes her a praise in the earth.” (Isaiah 62:1, 6-7 Emphasis added.)

Instead of viewing the land and people of Israel as replaced by the Church, the Isaiah 62 prayer initiative views the centrality of Israel throughout the “Old” and New Testaments as an ongoing and valid facet of God’s interaction with mankind, with central prophetic significance in the world today and in the “End Times.”

Multiplied thousands, including many in the Israel Today member communities, have already responded – even before this current call to prayer. These are individuals and groups willing to be “posted as watchmen” in prayer, until righteousness and salvation shine forth from Zion, until Jerusalem is established as a praise in the earth.

Redemption and faithfulness to covenant

The Hebrew scriptures multiple times show the God of Israel “staking His reputation” on His ability to be faithful toward, and redeem Israel according to His covenant faithfulness. Therefore, “For Zion’s sake” is also “For the sake of My holy name.”

I was praying and for Israel and Romans 11:26 came to mind “All Israel will be saved.” I sensed that I needed to be upto date and pray for “Israeli Jews, Christians, Muslims, and atheists, ie all Israelis !
