The Israeli army (IDF) killed two members of Hamas’s elite Nukhba unit in airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday. One of the men had, according to the Israeli army, infiltrated Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023. Both terrorists are said to have most recently been involved in preparing further attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians, and were working to restore Hamas’s military capabilities. On Monday morning, the army announced the killing of four additional terrorists in the northern Gaza Strip.

Muhammad Kamel Masleh Qadih was killed in an operation in the Khan Yunis area in the southern Gaza Strip. A further strike in the Nuseirat area in central Gaza targeted Diaa Abd al-Mohsen Muhammad Abu al-Rous.

According to the IDF, both men belonged to the Nukhba unit of Hamas’s military wing. The Nukhba unit is considered one of the terrorist organization’s most important military special forces. During the October 7 attack, Nukhba fighters formed a significant part of the first assault waves. They breached the border barriers into Israel, attacked military bases and civilian communities, and were involved in numerous abductions.

Raid on Nir Oz on October 7

The killing of Muhammad Kamel Masleh Qadih is of particular significance. According to the Israeli army, he was among the Hamas terrorists who infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7, 2023 massacre and raided Kibbutz Nir Oz.

The IDF also identified him as being responsible for the operational readiness of Nukhba terrorists. The military initially provided no further details about his specific role or his involvement in individual acts committed in Nir Oz.

Nir Oz was among the most severely affected Israeli communities during the Hamas attack. Hundreds of terrorists stormed the small kibbutz near the border with the Gaza Strip. Residents were attacked in their homes, killed, or abducted. According to research by the news agency AP, more than 100 Hamas terrorists were dispatched to the kibbutz.

The Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom also documented the scale of the attack: 64 people were murdered, and 76 of the then approximately 400 residents were abducted to Gaza. The community thus became one of the central sites of the October 7 massacre.

The Israeli army has been systematically targeting Hamas members accused of involvement in the massacres and abductions of October 7 since the beginning of the war.

Elimination in the Nuseirat area

The second man killed in the recent strikes, Diaa Abd al-Mohsen Muhammad Abu al-Rous, also belonged to the Nukhba unit, according to the IDF. He was killed in a separate airstrike in the Nuseirat area in the central Gaza Strip. The Israeli army initially provided no further details about his specific role within the terrorist organization.

Prior to the strikes, measures were taken to limit possible harm to uninvolved civilians. According to the army, these included the use of precision-guided munitions and aerial surveillance of the target areas.

Four terrorists killed in the northern Gaza Strip

In addition, four Hamas terrorists were eliminated in the northern Gaza Strip, the IDF announced on Monday morning. In two separate strikes, the IDF killed two terrorists from Hamas’s military wing: Nabil Hamad, head of a department within Hamas’s recruitment apparatus, who was directly involved in strengthening and rebuilding Hamas’s military wing in the Gaza Strip; and Mohannad Nader Mahmoud Dahdouh, a sniper commander who actively participated in combat operations and carried out terrorist attacks against IDF troops.

Wael Naif Fahmi Muslim, a Nukhba terrorist who had infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7 massacre, was also eliminated. Another terrorist killed, Arafat Kamal Muhammad Ar’air, served as a squad leader in the terrorist group’s rocket division.

Ceasefire and renewed Hamas activities

The two strikes take place against the backdrop of the continued tense security situation in the Gaza Strip. Although a ceasefire is in effect, the Israeli military maintains a presence in parts of the territory.

Israel accuses Hamas of systematically violating the agreement and rebuilding its military structures. This includes the reactivation of terrorist cells, the preparation of new attacks, and the restoration of military infrastructure.

The Israeli military reported a total of 31 ceasefire violations for the period from October 1 to 15. Israeli troops from the Southern Command remain stationed in their operational areas in accordance with the applicable agreements, according to the IDF. The military stated that it would continue to act against threats that could endanger Israeli soldiers or civilians.
