On October 7, 2023, the Israeli people woke up to catastrophe. We’re still picking up the pieces.

On that same day, heroes were also born, whose stories are almost too amazing to be true. People full of spirit, full of inspiration and strength. People who understood the magnitude of the hour and the gaping need, and went out to help without anyone calling for their aid. Little by little the heroic stories are being collected, and we are beginning to be exposed to them. Here is one…

 

A fateful Shabbat

Menachem Kalmanzon, an Orthodox religious man who observes Shabbat, woke up on that Shabbat morning, which was also Simchat Torah, to the sound of the phone ringing (something that does not usually happen on Shabbat). But this Shabbat the notifications started coming to his phone one after another. At the same time, he began to hear rocket interceptions and explosions, and did not understand what was happening. As was his habit, Menachem called his older brother, Elhanan, to get answers.
