Many Bible-believing Christians love to worship God. Indeed, worship is essential in both our personal and communal relationship with our Father, the God of Israel.
But what many believers and even worship leaders might have a tendency to overlook is that praise is connected to—and even an essential component of—spiritual warfare. As the Bible says: “Let the high praises of God be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand” (Psalm 149:6).
We are called to engage in a spiritual battle against evil: our guitars, stringed instruments (Psalm 150:4) and the double-edged sword go hand-in-hand. These are more powerful than conventional weapons. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).
How are we supposed to fight this spiritual battle? Let’s read on: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (verse 17).
