Trees, both in the Old and in the New Testament, serve as an inspiring metaphor and instructive symbol. The personifications of trees in Scripture reveal a message. Just like in biblical times, today’s inhabitants of the Land of Israel are reminded of biblical themes in the wide variety of trees surrounding them.
Even for those not living in Israel it is easy to imagine certain foliage mentioned in the Bible. In the Middle Ages, European Christians visualized Jerusalem and drew maps of the Holy City and of the entire Holy Land without physically touching the local ground.
