Yedidim, Israel’s angels of the road

Little stories of ordinary kindness that help us remember to be there for one another, even in trying times.

Once again Google Maps deceived me in Israel, when I found myself on a dirt road soaked with water from the sprinklers of the adjacent field. And then I found myself trapped in a pool of mud on a dead-end road (as later became clear) with a full day schedule ahead.

My friend Aviel said I had two choices: Call Yedidim (free), or a paid service (₪1200). Yedidim promised help and a 4-wheel jeep arrived within an hour, pulling me out of the mud. But then my rescuer got stuck himself, and after 100 meters I found my car stuck in the mud once again.

Anyway, it was a nice day, but dawn lurked, so my Yedidim friend called another Yedidim friend that got us both out of the mud and on the road again.

This reminded me of my first month in Israel, when I found myself dead tired in the middle of the night with a flat tire on an unknown road (to me at least). Before I had found my spare tire, a car stopped, offered help, changed my tire and had me on the road within 10 minutes (refusing any money). Obviously also Yedidim.

So, all in all: Thank you Yedidim, you are the true angels of the road in Israel!
