The Israel Film Archive this month launched its digitized collection of news reels, commercials, home films and more going back to the 1920s, providing an incredible historical look at life in the Holy Land during the British Mandate and on through Israel’s rebirth as a nation-state.

These films were previously only accessible through special screenings at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. In 2015, a $10 million budget was provided to restore, preserve and digitize this important film collection. With over 30% of the films now in digital format, the Israel Film Archive is presenting them to the public through a new website.

Most of the films are in Hebrew, but all that have been digitized now have English descriptions and subtitles, where applicable.

The films can be browsed by category, location, decade and more.
