In recent months, we have repeatedly reported that Israeli soldiers are going to war with prayers, hymns, and other traditional practices. During the High Holy Days, soldiers in the Gaza Strip sounded the shofar, as in biblical times. From the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, we shared photos and videos on our Telegram channel showing soldiers building sukkot (tabernacles) to celebrate the biblical festival of Sukkot even in war zones. This, and much more, suggests a shift within the Israeli army that wasn’t as evident before. Granted, earlier wars lacked the extensive media networks of today, which now bring everything to us live. This isn’t necessarily a good thing, as we don’t need to see everything. Moreover, this often sidesteps important censorship, which is a problem since soldiers frequently film everything on the battlefield and send it around the world.

It was improper for Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi to remove the patch. Indeed it was prophetic for this patch to be deployed in this new year 5785. Very soon this will be the standard patch for all IDF.
