From the Cross to the Caliphs, from the Middle Ages to the modern era, the same reflex appears everywhere: whenever nations, religions, or ideologies tear one another apart, sooner or later a Jew is found who is supposedly responsible. This pattern is no coincidence. It is a spiritual symptom. Whenever a civilization fails because of its own internal contradictions, it looks for an external cause, and that cause is usually found in the Jewish people. That is how it was in Christianity, which needed centuries to acknowledge its own guilt for the violence of the Crusades. And that is how it was in Islam, whose inner rift between Sunnis and Shiites still bleeds today, because even in the original schism of Islam, a Jew appears, this time in the form of a man from Yemen named Abdallah ibn Saba.
