Israel’s population surpasses 10 million for the first time

Israel’s population has exceeded the 10-million mark for the first time at the end of the year, continuing a long-term demographic growth trend.

Israel reached a demographic milestone at the turn of the year. According to official figures, the country’s population has risen to 10,178,000 people. The data were released shortly before year’s end and reflect continued stable growth—despite the war, the security situation and increased emigration.

The latest figures show that Israel remains one of the most dynamically growing populations among Western countries, even in difficult times. The main drivers of growth continue to be the high birth rate as well as ongoing immigration, although the latter has weakened recently.

Current figures and population structure

According to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, the population grew by about 1.1 percent in 2025. A total of 10,178,000 people now live in the country. Of these, approximately 7.77 million are Jews and other non-Arab population groups. Around 2.15 million residents are Arab citizens of Israel. In addition, there are about 260,000 foreign nationals with permanent resident status.

During the year, around 182,000 children were born. About three quarters of the births were to Jewish families, while roughly one quarter were to Arab families. At the same time, Israel recorded about 50,000 deaths. The natural population increase therefore remained clearly positive.

The growth rate is roughly in line with that of the previous year. Nevertheless, statisticians note that growth would have been higher without the war. In particular, the number of new immigrants declined compared to earlier years, while emigration increased noticeably.

Long-term trend despite war and emigration

Despite these pressures, Israel’s demographic development remains exceptional. Since the founding of the state in 1948, the population has increased more than twelvefold. At that time, fewer than one million people lived in the country.

A key factor continues to be the comparatively young age structure of the population. By international standards, Israel still has a high birth rate, particularly within the Jewish population segment. Even though immigration has declined recently, it remains a structural element of population growth.

Experts view the current figures as a signal of social stability. Despite war, security threats and economic uncertainty, the population continues to grow. At the same time, this poses increasing challenges for policymakers and public administration, particularly in housing construction, infrastructure, healthcare and the education system.

The milestone of more than 10 million residents is therefore seen not only as a statistical benchmark, but also as a strategic factor for Israel’s future development.
