Every morning I drive my “children” to the train station in Modi’in. It is one of those everyday routines meant to give you the feeling that life goes on. People board the train to Tel Aviv with coffee cups in hand, students sit sleepily in the back seats of cars, and on the radio there are news updates, weather, and music — apparently a normal Israeli morning.
And yet nothing is truly normal.
Because almost every morning, at some point, that report comes. Another fallen soldier. Another drone from Lebanon. Another name, another face, another family torn out of ordinary life in a matter of seconds.
Today it happened again. As I drove, the newsreader spoke about diplomatic efforts, about talks between the United States and Iran, about possible regional agreements. Almost in the same breath came the report of an Israeli soldier who had fallen in the north.
This simultaneity is currently shaping our lives in Israel.
