An Israeli reservist has fallen in fighting against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization in southern Lebanon. Eight other soldiers were wounded in the same incident.

The Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, announced that Master Sergeant (res.) Alexander Filin of Haifa was killed at the age of 29. Filin served in the headquarters of the 36th Division and was killed during IDF ground operations near the Litani River in southern Lebanon.

According to Israeli reports, a bomb planted by Hezbollah exploded during the operation. Filin was fatally wounded. Eight other soldiers were injured. Three sustained moderate wounds, while five others were lightly wounded. The injured soldiers were evacuated to hospitals, and their families were notified.

Defense Minister Israel Katz paid tribute to the fallen reservist in a public statement. “Alexander repeatedly reported for reserve duty, driven by a deep sense of responsibility,” Katz wrote. He added: “I embrace his family in this difficult hour. I wish the soldiers wounded in the incident a full and speedy recovery, and I stand with the IDF soldiers and commanders who continue to operate with courage in Lebanon.”

Filin is the 18th Israeli killed by Hezbollah since the ceasefire between Jerusalem and Beirut. That agreement was reached through American mediation. The reservist’s death shows how fragile the situation in the north has remained, despite the official language of a ceasefire.

According to official IDF figures, the number of Israeli soldiers killed on all fronts since the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, has now reached 957. Behind each of these numbers stands a family, a home, and another empty seat at an Israeli table.

Further Drone and Rocket Attacks

The deadly incident was not the only attack on Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. In another incident, an IDF soldier was seriously wounded when an explosive Hezbollah drone struck near Israeli troops. Two other soldiers were moderately wounded, and two more were lightly wounded.

The IDF later fired an interceptor at a second “suspicious aerial target” that had been detected near Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. According to the military, no Israeli soldiers were wounded in that second incident.

Later that evening, several Hezbollah rockets landed near Israeli troops. Additional rockets were intercepted by the Israeli Air Force. According to the IDF, there were no injuries in that attack.

In response to the rocket fire, the Israeli Air Force struck a launcher. According to the military, the launcher was loaded and ready to fire additional rockets. The statement said that following the strike, additional rockets were launched from the site and fell in open areas in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah had resumed its rocket and drone attacks on Israel after Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of Israel’s Operation Roaring Lion. Israel responded with a broad air campaign against Hezbollah terror targets and expanded its military operations in southern Lebanon. The aim of these operations is to prevent cross-border attacks on Israeli communities.

While international diplomacy continues to speak of a ceasefire, Israeli soldiers and residents of the north are experiencing a different reality. Hezbollah continues to attack, Israeli troops remain in action, and the price of that mission became visible once again with the death of Alexander Filin.
