Last Thursday, President Delcy Rodríguez became the first leader of the South American country since Hugo Chávez to publicly praise Israel. The occasion was the Israeli relief mission dispatched following the devastating earthquake.
Although numerous countries had sent aid missions, she specifically highlighted Israel’s unique professional expertise.
“I would like to report that yesterday we received an extremely professional and highly qualified group from Israel, which came to us following contact through Venezuela’s Jewish community. I would like to thank Rabbi Cohen—Yitzhak Cohen, the chief rabbi of Venezuela—for all the coordination that made it possible to establish contact with the Israeli government and bring an expert team here at this time. The team has begun implementing the protocol for initiating the reconstruction of infrastructure and assessing its condition,” Rodríguez said at a press conference.
