Rep. Ro Khanna’s claim that he was “detained” by armed Israelis during a visit to Judea and Samaria is facing a forceful rebuttal from Israel’s ambassador to the United States, who says the incident was entirely avoidable—and appears to have been orchestrated for political effect.
In a detailed public statement, Ambassador Yechiel Leiter accused the California Democrat of refusing repeated offers to coordinate his itinerary with both the Israeli government and the US Embassy in Jerusalem, despite being invited to do so specifically to prevent security misunderstandings.
Instead, Khanna traveled with pro-Palestinian activists and journalists from The New York Times “with cameras at the ready,” according to Leiter.
The group then entered a closed military zone without prior authorization. Because the vehicle was unknown to nearby IDF forces, soldiers briefly stopped it as part of routine security procedures.
“The moment details of the Congressman’s identity were cleared, he was free to go,” Leiter noted. “At no point was the congressman, or any member of his party, threatened by the soldiers, or civilians bearing arms.”
Those facts sharply contradict Khanna’s social media account, in which he alleged that armed “settlers” detained him before the IDF allegedly joined them in prolonging the incident. He later used the episode to repeat accusations that Israel is committing “genocide” and practicing “apartheid.”
Leiter said that response revealed the true purpose of the visit.
“The facts don’t lie—this was a cheap, anticipated provocation that could, and should have been avoided.”
The ambassador also rejected Khanna’s subsequent accusations that he had lied about the incident, inviting the congressman instead to meet at the Israeli Embassy in Washington for “an in-depth conversation” about his concerns.
The affair underscores a growing pattern in which brief, routine security encounters in Israel are repackaged into viral allegations designed to reinforce preexisting political narratives. In this case, Israeli officials argue, the evidence points not to misconduct by the IDF, but to a calculated attempt to manufacture another headline accusing Israel of abuse.
